SEO basics: how to make your website visible on Google

A website nobody finds is an expensive business card. SEO is the set of moves that explain to Google what your site is about and why it deserves to be shown. You do not need an agency for the basics — you need a few hours and a bit of order.

This is a guide for small businesses, without jargon, with steps you can do yourself.

1. Start with keywords, not with copy

A keyword is what someone actually types. It is rarely your company name — far more often it is „plumber Novi Sad” or „website cost”. Make a list of ten to twenty such phrases.

How to find them without tools

  • Type your service into Google and look at the suggestions that appear.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the results, to „Related searches”.
  • Look at „People also ask” — those are ready-made article topics.
  • Remember how clients ask you on the phone. They use the same words as in search.

Longer, more specific phrases have fewer searches but a far better chance of ranking and of turning into an actual enquiry.

2. One topic — one page

Do not try to cover everything on a single page. Give each main service its own page and optimise it for one main phrase. That way both the visitor and Google know exactly where they are.

3. Page title and description

These are the two lines shown in search results, and they decide whether anyone clicks.

  • Title — up to about 60 characters, keyword near the start, company name at the end.
  • Meta description — up to about 155 characters, a concrete benefit and a call to action.

Example: „Web design Novi Sad — fast websites for small businesses | Webinovator”.

4. Text structure

One H1 per page, then H2 for the main sections and H3 for sub-sections. Short paragraphs, lists where they fit naturally. Use the keyword in the title, in the first paragraph and a few more times through the text — as often as reads naturally, no more.

5. Images

  • Resize them before uploading and use modern formats.
  • Give the file a meaningful name: web-design-novi-sad.jpg, not IMG_4821.jpg.
  • Fill in the alt text — a short description of what is in the image.

6. Speed

Speed is both a ranking factor and an abandonment factor. Check your site with Google PageSpeed Insights and start with the biggest culprit — almost always oversized images, then plugins and the theme.

7. Local SEO — the fastest result for small businesses

  1. Create and fill in a Google Business profile — category, opening hours, phone, photos.
  2. Write the address and phone identically everywhere: on the site, on the profile, in directories.
  3. Ask happy clients for reviews. They directly affect who Google shows on the map.
  4. Mention the city in titles and copy — naturally, not stuffed in.

8. Internal linking

Link from every page to related pages. Google crawls the site more easily and visitors stay longer. Our own example: from this article we link to what a small business website must contain and to our services.

9. Content that answers questions

A blog is not compulsory, but it is the cheapest way to catch searches your sales pages cannot. One article a month answering a concrete client question is worth more than ten empty posts.

10. Measure, and be patient

Set up Google Search Console — it is free and shows which queries you appear for and where you rank. First movements usually show after two or three months, serious results after six.

Frequently asked questions

How long until my site appears on Google?

Indexing takes a few days to two weeks. Ranking for competitive phrases takes months.

Do I need an SEO plugin?

On WordPress, yes — without one you cannot set page titles and descriptions manually. Rank Math and Yoast are the standard.

Is it better to pay for ads instead of SEO?

Ads work immediately but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO is slower but it stays. For most small businesses a combination works best.

Conclusion

SEO for a small business is not magic: clear keywords, one topic per page, tidy titles and descriptions, a fast site and a filled-in Google Business profile. That is 80% of the job.
